Will eating only ramen noodles help me gain less weight?

by thinkweek 2026. 3. 19.

Hello! Even though I usually enjoy ramen, wouldn't it be okay if I just threw away the broth and eat only the noodles due to health or dieting? I think you've probably had the worry of "that" at least once. Today, I'm going to analyze in detail and in depth how the actual calories and nutrients change when we only consume noodles from ramen, and what effects it has on our bodies.

Will eating only ramen noodles help me gain less weight?

Ramen is often called the synonym for sodium, but in fact, the main body of calories is in noodles. The calories of a typical bag of fried noodles that we usually buy at the supermarket are around 500kcal. The proportion of noodles here is more absolute than you might think. This is because noodles undergo a frying process (fried in oil), resulting in a very high fat content as well as carbohydrates.

According to general analysis, about 70 to 80 percent of the total calories in a pack of ramen are concentrated on the noodles themselves. In other words, even if we don't drink a single drop of the soup and just take out the noodles, we will already be consuming about 350 to 400 kcal. Considering that a bowl of rice is usually 300kcal, it is difficult to say that eating only noodles is a low-calorie diet.

In terms of nutritional components, noodles are mainly composed of refined flour. This means that the proportion of simple carbohydrates that quickly raise blood sugar is high. Saturated fats such as palm oil absorbed during the frying process are added here. Therefore, when we only eat noodles, the main nutrients we get are carbohydrates and fats, and we become in an imbalanced state with a severe lack of protein, vitamins, and dietary fiber.

However, there are definite benefits to be gained when you give up the broth. That is, you can dramatically reduce sodium intake. More than 80 percent of the sodium in ramen is dissolved in the broth. If you only take out the noodles, you can avoid consuming a significant amount of sodium, except for some seasoning on the surface of the noodles. This can prevent swelling caused by water stagnation in the body and play a positive role in blood pressure management.

You can lower the calories of the noodles even more by changing the recipe a little. By using the noodle washing method, which involves boiling noodles once in separate boiling water, discarding the water, and then cooking them with fresh water again, you can remove a significant portion of the oil (fat) that was adsorbed on the noodles. Through this process, you can see the effect of additionally reducing about 50 to 100 kcal.

In conclusion, eating only noodles in ramen is very effective in controlling sodium, but it does not drastically reduce the calories themselves. If you're thinking about your health, the wisest way is to boil the noodles once, take them out, and add plenty of eggs, green onions, mushrooms, etc. to supplement the protein and dietary fiber that you lack.
Choosing to improve the quality of nutrition rather than simply reducing the amount you eat will complete your healthy eating habits. I hope you have a delicious meal and have a vibrant day today.
